I remember on two occasions (and I’m not proud of either) while hiking in wilderness areas I’ve managed to get lost. I blamed the weather both times. Once dense fog surrounded me and I lost site of landmarks, the second event entailed a surprise snow storm. For the seasoned outdoors types reading this...yes I had a compass and a map and I know how to use them both…and didn’t.
In retrospect the thing I remember most about wandering in dense fog or blinding snow was the incredible surge of energy and optimism that occurred the second I found a familiar landmark. I knew at that moment where to go, how far it was, and how long it would take. I was certain.
Another new year has come to us and with it another new decade. Both have delivered a raft of dense fog, snow storms and uncertainties in the global and national economic, political, environmental and social scene. Here in Lewis County we have some uncertainties of our own. We also have seasoned business leaders who recognize landmarks.
Those who have been on uncertain trails before and have not only found their way, but have prospered. And, while for the moment we may be in some political, social, environmental or economic fog, there are those around us who recognize the landmarks and will help keep us all moving. It doesn’t mean that when the fog lifts we won’t have some steep climbing ahead of us. It just means we don’t need to give into the urge to panic.
Those who have sustained us to this point didn’t give in. They have given us a legacy. Not a legacy of fear. Rather a legacy of what matters. Things that matter now and in the future. For those of you who read history, perhaps you’ve noticed that legacy is built in hard times. We tend to lose our accuracy and sharpness when things are easy and times are good.
Just as when I was hiking in good weather, not expecting fog or snow, I lost my way; I lost perception of where I was. Then the legacy of those who had taught me to be confident in the wilderness sustained me and sharpened my focus and resolve.
Take a moment and give serious thought to the strength of the Lewis County legacy. Take a moment to remember those who have taught us to keep our resolve in tough times. Take a moment to think about the legacy we are building at the moment. Are we teaching resilience, focus and strength? Are we communicating boldness to act and move forward? I believe we are.
We hold shared and fundamental beliefs about Lewis County and its people. And it starts with everyone who stays in this county longer than to refuel and shop.
